An FEU stands for Forty-foot Equivalent Unit. FEU is a unit used to define and describe the capacity of large shipping containers in the shipping industry. It is a 40 feet long container, twice the size of a TEU, which is a 20 feet long container. FEUs are very essential in international trade and logistics, as they standardize the volume and capacity of the boxes across each shipment.
An FEU is a box of 40 feet long by 8 feet in width by 8.5 feet in height. Such containers are much bigger than a TEU and ideal for high-volume or oversized cargo. Carrying heavy volumes of cargo in fewer containers increases the capacity, thereby leaving fewer chances to have pipes bursting during journey-which in turn leaves fewer choices, including the costliest choice, to carry the goods.
FEUs are applied usually in maritime shipping due to a huge size and for transporting goods over long distances. Due to its size, it is okay for bulk shipments or oversized cargo or when it transports varieties of goods in one container. The containers are often used on container ships, trains, and trucks, and thus ideal for global logistics.
It is also called using the FEU term with TEU. It measures the capacity of a container. For instance, the capacity of the shipping vessel can be put in terms of TEUs. In this case, an FEU may equal two TEUs. Its integration helps determine space and cost in transporting goods for business use and shipping companies.
