Lift on, Lift off

What is Lift on, Lift off (LoLo) in Logistics?

In logistics, Lift on, Lift off (LoLo) refers to the cargo handling technique where goods are lifted on and off a vessel with cranes or other similar lifting equipment. Such shipment of heavy, oversized cargo, or even wholly unconventional cargo that cannot be simply rolled on or off a ship, is particularly valuable for shipping large machinery, industrial equipment, or even stacking shipping containers.

How It Works

The LoLo operation depends on either dock or vessel crane systems for the loading and unloading of cargo. This is mainly made in containerized freight as well as commodities that are too heavy, or those that have unusual shapes, that cannot use roll-on, roll-off techniques. LoLo operations require special equipment and handling, and therefore, it is best to be practiced in ports fitted with considerable crane facilities.

Advantages of LoLo

  • Versatile Cargo Handling: LoLo can handle any size of cargo, even cargo too large or heavy for RoRo techniques.
  • Optimization in use of Vessel Space: Since in the case of LoLo operations, cargo is stacked vertically, they help optimize vessel space. This can greatly reduce transport costs while maximizing cargo carried.
  • Over dimensional Loads: LoLo is an ideal solution for cargo that cannot be disassembled or is larger than that which conventional trailers can carry. This ensures construction equipment and parts of a wind turbine, among other mega items, are moved efficiently.

Conclusion

LoLo logistics provides a specialized handling approach for oversized or heavy cargo that cannot be rolled on or off the ships. The LoLo is efficient for using vessel space and takes on cargo types that are uniquely very different, making LoLo indispensable for global supply chains that require complex shipping.
